Stuffy Sinuses? How Chiropractic, Acupuncture, and Targeted Supplements May Help
Fall allergies, sinus congestion, post-nasal drip, coughing, headaches, and facial pressure can make you feel completely run down. Whether your symptoms are coming from seasonal allergies, a cold, sinus irritation, or lingering congestion, that “stuffed up” feeling can affect your sleep, energy, workouts, and overall comfort.
When the sinuses become inflamed or congested, drainage can slow down. This can create pressure through the forehead, cheeks, nose, jaw, ears, and even the neck. Many people also notice more headaches, tightness at the base of the skull, post-nasal drip, coughing, or that heavy “my head feels full” feeling.
At Modern Motion, we offer several supportive treatments that may help encourage sinus drainage, reduce tension, and support your body while it works through congestion.
Sinus Adjustment with the Activator
One of our favorite tools for sinus congestion is a gentle sinus adjustment using the Activator.
The Activator is a small chiropractic instrument that delivers a quick, gentle impulse to specific areas. For sinus support, it may be used around the sinus region, including areas near the forehead, cheekbones, nasal bones, and jaw, depending on where you are feeling pressure.
The goal is to gently stimulate movement in the tissues around the sinuses, reduce restriction, and encourage better drainage. This can be especially helpful when you feel blocked through the front of the face, heavy behind the eyes, or tight through the jaw and cheeks.
This technique is gentle, quick, and can often be added to your chiropractic visit if you are dealing with sinus pressure, congestion, or allergy-related headaches.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage
When your sinuses are congested, your lymphatic system is working hard behind the scenes. The lymphatic system helps move fluid, waste, and immune cells through the body.
Gentle lymphatic drainage massage may be used around the neck, jaw, collarbone, and upper chest to help encourage fluid movement. This can be helpful because sinus congestion often creates pressure and swelling through the face and neck, and drainage from the head and face moves through lymphatic pathways in the neck.
This type of work is usually light and gentle. It may help with that puffy, swollen, clogged feeling and can be especially relieving when sinus pressure is paired with neck tension, headaches, or pressure around the ears.
Cupping for Upper Back Tension and Coughing
If your congestion is also coming with coughing, chest tightness, or upper back tension, cupping may be a helpful add-on.
Coughing can create a lot of tightness through the upper back, ribs, shoulders, and neck. Cupping to the upper back may help loosen tight muscles, improve circulation to the area, and decrease some of the tension that builds from coughing, shallow breathing, or feeling congested for several days.
This can be especially helpful if you feel like your chest and upper back are tight, your shoulders are tense, or your cough is making your neck and back sore.
Acupuncture for Sinus Congestion and Allergy Support
Acupuncture can be a great option for sinus pressure, congestion, headaches, post-nasal drip, and seasonal allergy symptoms.
Specific acupuncture points along the sinuses may be used to help open the nasal passages, reduce facial pressure, and support drainage. These may include points near the nose, cheeks, forehead, and between the eyebrows, depending on where you feel the most pressure.
We may also use points in other areas of the body, such as the hands, arms, legs, and feet, to help support the immune system, calm inflammation, regulate the body’s response to allergens, and encourage better overall drainage.
This is one of the reasons acupuncture can be helpful for more than just pain. Sinus symptoms are not always just a “sinus problem.” They can involve inflammation, immune response, stress, tension, drainage, sleep, and overall body regulation.
Supplement Support for Allergies and Sinus Congestion
In addition to hands-on care, certain supplements may be helpful for supporting the body during allergy and sinus season.
At Modern Motion, we may recommend targeted support based on your symptoms, health history, and what you are currently dealing with. A few options we commonly discuss include:
Allerplex by Standard Process
Allerplex is often used as nutritional support during seasonal allergy season. It is designed to support the body’s natural immune and respiratory response.
This may be a good option for people who tend to struggle with seasonal allergy symptoms, especially when symptoms include sneezing, congestion, sinus pressure, or respiratory irritation.
D-Hist
D-Hist is a popular allergy support supplement that may help with seasonal allergy symptoms like sneezing, congestion, runny nose, and sinus pressure.
It is often used during allergy season to support a healthy histamine response. This can be helpful for people who feel like their allergies flare at the same time each year or who notice symptoms after exposure to pollen, ragweed, mold, grass, or other seasonal triggers.
D-Hist is available in the office.
Sinatrol
Sinatrol is another option we carry in the office and may recommend for more direct sinus support.
This is one we often think about when someone is looking for quicker sinus relief. It may be helpful when symptoms are more intense or when congestion is coming from allergies, a cold, sinus irritation, or lingering sinus pressure.
Sinatrol may be a good option if you feel stuffed up, heavy through the face, congested in the head, or like your sinuses are not draining well.
